Inside a Complex Wildfire Insurance Claim in Pacific Palisades

Insurance claims are about more than repair estimates and policy language. For homeowners, they represent stability and security. They reflect a simple belief: if something unexpected happens, the protection you have paid for will be there when you need it.

That belief is built over years of paying premiums and putting trust in an insurance company to handle a loss fairly, especially when the stakes are highest.

Recently, we began working on a particularly meaningful case involving homeowners impacted by the 2025 Palisades Fires. This claim remains ongoing, and certain details are still under review. Still, their experience is worth sharing because it shows how wildfire losses can turn into complex, multi-layered insurance claims that extend far beyond visible fire damage.

When the Fire Reaches Your Doorstep

By the third day of the Palisades Fire, Dana and Kario believed they had lost their home. Their home sits near Mandeville Canyon, nestled within an area that was placed under a mandatory evacuation order as the fire advanced.

When they were eventually able to return, the damage was extensive both inside the home and across the property:

  • The home sustained smoke damage throughout the interior, including the walls, HVAC system, windows, and plumbing.
  • The perimeter fence was destroyed, and any remaining sections were coated in fire retardant and required washdown.
  • Burned and dead wood along the hillside had to be cleared before the fence could be repaired or erosion netting could be installed.
  • The pool was filled with dirty water, branches, leaves, and other debris, requiring drainage and cleaning, as well as power washing of the surrounding tile.
  • The vines covering the retaining wall were scorched, and the retaining wall beneath them showed signs of smoke damage.

The physical damage was only part of what they were dealing with. Since Dana and Kario both work from home their displacement affected their routines, their workdays, and their ability to plan from one week to the next.

They described living in a constant state of uncertainty: not knowing when they would be able to return, not knowing whether every category of damage would be taken seriously, and not knowing whether the process would be handled fairly.

Insurance claims are often treated like financial negotiations. For the people living through them, they are far more personal. A claim can determine whether a home is truly safe, whether a family can regain stability, and whether moving forward is even possible.

Reducing Uncertainty During a Difficult Claim

When Rubin Adjusting became involved, the first priority was clarity: understanding what happened, documenting what was damaged, and creating a path forward that matched the reality of the loss.

As Dana later shared with our team, “It was very empowering to have you in our lives. The trauma level got taken down to such a degree where we could think again.”

Why Complex Claims Require Careful Advocacy

Dana and Kario’s experience reflects a broader reality facing many Southern California homeowners. Wildfire losses rarely fit into neat categories, and they do not always end with what is visible.

When a claim involves multiple layers of damage, careful documentation and persistent advocacy become essential. Especially when multiple forms of damage intersect, including fire, smoke, soil instability, erosion, and flood impacts, a structured approach becomes critical.

You don’t have to navigate a complicated claim alone. Rubin Adjusting brings over 50 years of experience advocating for California property owners facing complex insurance claims. If you are dealing with a wildfire-related loss, especially one involving multiple layers of damage, our team is available to review your situation and discuss next steps.
